The BOR EPSCoR Committee met this morning. Of potential interest were two items. There will be a slight change to the scoring of the SURE proposals. Please check the RFP carefully when the call comes out in the fall. Also, there will be an extra effort to get more OPT-IN proposals funded in the future. OPT-IN funds a joint business-university project with a match from the business. Success rate on these is very high. I will be trying to advertise the program to local businesses and then find a partner on campus.

We recently received notice that three of the five SURE applications submitted by UNO faculty were awarded. The SURE award supports undergraduate research for minority students. The BOR received 137 applications and awarded only 43, which is a 31% success rate. UNOs success rate was 60%. We have a new initiative that will be announced at the end of the summer to increase the number of SURE applicants from UNO, stay tuned...

The EPSCoR Committee met yesterday and here's a few items of interest: the Acting Director of NSF EPSCoR is Denise Barnes (who happens to be from New Orleans), regarding the NASA EPSCoR program even though the proposals were due yesterday the RFP from NASA is not out yet, the second round of the SURE program has a due date of April 17th and the second round of the OPT-IN program will be due May 15. Finally, faculty are encouraged to participate in the Third Industry/Academia Workshop (on Biosciences) here in New Orleans at the end of April. A campus email blast will go out next week.

The BoR has issued the Request for Applications (RFA) for the EPSCoR Supervised Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) program for 2012. This program provides opportunities for female and underrepresented minority undergraduate students to participate in research with faculty mentors. Students accepted into the program will receive a stipend of $4,000, while the faculty mentor will receive $500 per student for costs associated with the research experience. Applications are due April 17, 2012. Please note that minor changes have been made to this RFA; the application submission process is somewhat different from that used for the last competition, so the application form that accompanied the previous SURE RFA cannot be used. The RFA is also available on the Board's Sponsored Programs website at http://laregents.org.

All three proposals from UNO in the BoR Opportunities for Partnership in Technology with Industry (OPT-IN) were selected for funding. Congratulations to Drs. Humin Chen (ENEE), Ting Wang (ECCC) and Weilie Zhou (AMRI)!

I attended the BoR Sponsored Programs last week. Because of projections from the revenue estimating committee they are anticipating cuts of approximately 10% in their programs. As such, most of their funding programs will be cut by 10%. An exception is the Enhancement program which will not be cut. Also, they will encourage multidisciplinary enhancement proposals by allocating as much as 20% of the enhancement funds to multidisciplinary proposals.

Notice concerning Supervised Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) Competition A request for proposals (RFP) for the SURE program was issued on April 21, 2011. This program seeks to increase the participation of women and underrepresented minorities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines. The RFP specified that there would be two rounds of competition, the first with proposals due on May 9, 2011 and the second with proposals due December 1, 2011. The purpose of this notice is to announce that the second competition will be deferred until spring, 2012. A new, revised RFP will be issued for this competition and will be posted on the Board of Regents Sponsored Programs website at http://laregents.org/.

A reminder about Board of Regents funding for travel grants. The TGEF proposals have a high success rate. During the summer months when faculty teaching and other responsibilities are reduced you should consider applying to obtain a TGEF grant and use the funding to visit a federal funding agency. This will help your chances of obtaining federal funding in the future. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs can help you with the application for the TGEF award and contacting the appropriate federal program officer. If you are interested please contact us at orsp@uno.edu This email has been distributed to all faculty. Travel Grants for Emerging Faculty (TGEF) The TGEF program, which consists of two components (I and II), was established to assist emerging faculty (tenure track but non-tenured) in the science and engineering disciplines by providing travel funds needed to further their research and build strong collaborations. The eligible disciplines include: biological sciences (all); mathematical & computer sciences; earth & environmental sciences (geology, oceanography, environmental); engineering (all); physical sciences (astronomy, chemistry, physics); and the social & behavioral sciences. TGEF I provides up to $1,200 to untenured tenure-track faculty seeking to visit a federal funding agency program officer to discuss their research proposals. The award amount can be increased to $2,400 if the applicant is accompanied by an established tenured professor. TGEF II provides up to $1,200 to untenured tenure-track faculty who have been invited to present plenary or major invited talks at national or international meetings. Open deadline: June 30, 2015 Applicants must submit proposals to LA EPSCoR at the Board of Regents at least 30 days prior to the requested start date of travel. http://web.laregents.org/programs/epscor-programs/travel-grants-for-emerging-faculty-tgef/
