The symposium will be held March 30-31, 2012 at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center in Bowling Green, KY. The symposium is open to all scientists, engineers and students from a wide range of disciplines involved in microtechnology, nanotechnology and advanced materials. The symposium also promises to expand the awareness of core facilities that exist within the region and to cultivate new research collaborations. Presentations focused on advanced material synthesis, metrology and characterization, devices, education, and core facilities will highlight the symposium. The agenda and information on registration can be found on the symposium web site: http://www.largechamber.com/Events/2012/index.html.

I attended the BoR Sponsored Programs last week. Because of projections from the revenue estimating committee they are anticipating cuts of approximately 10% in their programs. As such, most of their funding programs will be cut by 10%. An exception is the Enhancement program which will not be cut. Also, they will encourage multidisciplinary enhancement proposals by allocating as much as 20% of the enhancement funds to multidisciplinary proposals.

We are having a Jam Session on Monday, November 21st starting at noon in Earth & Environmental and Psychology Building room 2013. All faculty and staff are invited. The Jam Session will be about one hour in length. If you are unable to stay for the entire hour, drop by and listen for a few minutes. A light lunch will be provided or you can bring your own. Scheduled speaker for the November 21st session is: Stephen Gasior, Ph.D. Instructor in the Biological Science Department “I and collaborators are developing virtual learning tools in chemistry and biology for use in both virtual courses and in standard lecture courses. This talk with give an overview of the technology, show the specific assignments, and how it can be used in courses. We are looking for faculty to try these out in their courses and for education researchers to analyze their effectiveness with an eye to apply for grant funding. The new aspect of this effort compared to anything coming before is the scale at which these can be deployed and minimizes the technological needs for the course instructor.” Plan on attending – there may be an opportunity for you to become involved in the development of new learning tools! Direct any questions to Carol Mitton at cmitton@uno.edu or 280-5546.
