Reflecting an overall trend in U.S. export growth, Louisiana’s first quarter 2011 worldwide merchandise exports increased by 47.7 percent in value compared to 2010, according to a report issued today by the World Trade Center of New Orleans. At almost $15 billion, it is the highest single-quarter on record, exceeding the fourth quarter of 2010 by more than $1 billion. Total U.S. exports were up 18 percent for the quarter, with Louisiana surging to 4th in state rankings, compared to 8th for the same period in 2010. Only Texas, California, and New York ranked ahead of Louisiana in value of exports. Among the top ten exporting states, Louisiana had the highest rate of growth. Louisiana’s principal export markets for the first quarter were China ($2.35 billion), Mexico ($1.28 billion), and the Netherlands ($926 million), followed by Japan, Korea, Egypt, and Canada.
