UNO Receives $300,000 NSF Grant to Train Students in Cybersecurity
By Admin (on 8/29/2014 @ 13:41:26, in ORSP Announcements, read 799 times)

Vassil Roussev, a University of New Orleans computer science professor, has received a 2-year $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to offer students cutting-edge training in the field of cybersecurity.

The grant will allow UNO to provide students with a self-contained cybersecurity lab. Students will install special software on their laptops that will enable them to download different lab scenarios that the instructor has prepared. Students will then try to solve realistic cybersecurity problems.

"This is as close as we can get to preparing students for a real job in cybersecurity short of them actually having the job," Roussev said. "Companies strongly prefer graduates with hands-on experience, and this technology will allow our students to get professional-type training."

The NSF's Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace program is extremely competitive; only 10 out of 56 educational proposals received funding.

UNO is designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education and Research by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.
